Great review. In the market for a new boot. This might be it.
Love mine
Been looking for a quality review much appreciated!
Many thanks!
I dont recommend sunglasses. Use actual ski goggles. You can get freeze.
I can only wear ski goggles in super-freezing cold conditions, but in normal weather (98% of the days I ride), I can't. They fog up. It's best to have my Goggles in their goggle sock in my backpack. They never freeze or fog up there.
Phenomenal review lads. Smith are legendary. Have the embark, deckboss, lowdown, 4d mag etc and I find myself continuously reaching for them over my vast eyewear quiver 😂 as nothing IMO compares or performs as consistently well. Only drawback here in New Zealand is price. You certainly get the quality if you have the dollars.
Many thanks and thanks for your take.
I bought this board in 163 in the inaugural year of its release for the 20/21 season and having had hundreds of hours with this particular board underfoot, I can tell you that it’s the most intense and aggressive freeride board on the market. Maybe only the Capita Black Snowboard of Death truly competes with it, but this board is even better in my personal opinion. I haven’t bought the redesigned version yet, but I’m planning to grab the 24/25 164W once preorders open up because I think I’d appreciate another half centimeter or so of width as well. I think the thing that most surprised me with this particular board has been the powder performance. I didn’t buy this board for powder days, I have other boards in my quiver for that, but I’ve taken it out in powder several times anyways because I like this board so much and wow, just wow, this board absolutely rocks the whole mountain in every known condition possible! The only thing I wouldn’t personally do with this board is hit rails in the park, it’s not a jibbing board whatsoever, but besides that, it really can do it all and the board sticks landings on cliff drops like nothing else out there 😁
Thanks for your take.
Awesome demonstration and explanation, thanks a lot!
I’m glad I waited to buy one of these until the 2025 preorders opened up. I saw a video with Arthur saying they were working on wide versions and with my size 12’s I really felt like waiting was the right call 😁
I think it’s weird that Burton only made the Territory Manager for 2022/23 and then immediately discontinued it even though so many riders gave it favorable reviews 🤷🏼♂️
Burton does that a lot.
@@thegoodridesnow yeah, but usually not on the boards that got such favorable reviews and sold out so quickly haha
Unfortunately they do. Check thegoodride.com to see all the 1 season boards they made that rode super well.
@@thegoodridesnow interesting, I’ve only noticed them discontinuing the boards that still had enough stock for spring sales in the past. I thought this board sold out prior to March 2023
They are much further ahead than that design/sales wise. Stores are taking orders from Brands almost a year ahead and Brands are planning their line 2+ years ahead. It was already long gone by spring 2023.
Red jacket looking TIGHT !!
That skyline fuse jacket is beautiful
Thanks! It's the best jacket I've ever owned.
Hey guys! I have the rome katanas L, paired with K2 enders. The katanas have been cutting into the sides of the boots. Have you guys heard anything of that issue?
What size Ender and where exactly is it cutting into the boots?
nice surfing, yeew!
thanks!
I bought this board in 166cm the first year it dropped and also ride it at Mount Bachelor. It’s honestly a perfect Bachelor board for deep days or if you wanna have a retro ride experience on a spring groomer day. But I’d honestly contend that you have to wax this board after every single use, the edges lose their fast so fast if you ride it hard….. Mervin bases man 😂😂😂
Agreed.
I had a good laugh when you guys talked about having nowhere to truly test steeps at Mount Bachelor. There’s a reason why us locals call it Mount Flat-chelor 😂 Side note though, when you’re getting off Northwest, just head way off to the right as soon as you get off the chair(left when looking downhill). There’s some terrain over that way with some excellent drops if you know where to find them 😉👍🏼
yes...we know but that isn't steep to us and most riders out there. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Days at Mount Bachelor where the snow is blower enough to get the white room effect are the best! Love this resort, great tree riding and on days where there’s no new snow they generally do a great job preparing their groomed trails
Why’d you size up from the custom to custom X? Wouldn’t you want to downsize to compensate for the extra stiffness in the X?
Its lighter and more chattery/less fun in uneven snow. So sizing up makes it less chattery but it's still more than the Custom.
@@thegoodridesnow more chattery than the regular custom? But if it’s stiffer and you size up doesn’t it make it harder to control because of the stiffness? You think it’s lighter weight is what’s for sure making it chattery and not it’s rigidly from the extra carbon? I ride a 156 regular custom and you think the x should be sized up? Thanks.
Yes, it's more chattery than the Custom. It's most likely a combination of carbon, the lighter core, and the thin top sheet. I've ridden many boards with lots of carbon and lighter cores that also have rubber, urethane, thicker top sheets, or even metal in the core to dampen the ride/reduce chatter. I know nothing about you, so it's hard to say if you should size up. I'd at least need your boot size, height, and weight to suggest a size. If you want to do this right and really get into it, hit me here to give me all the info I need to help you much better. shop.thegoodride.com/merchandise/gear-advice/
Hey James I’ve been eyeing this for a long time and I’ve found a cheap version, two questions, with the short channel, do you think I can get to 22.5inch stance width on the 155 with est without compromising Performance? Also do you think it was stiff due to demo or just more stiff than what Burton says. This is for Japan , I need manoeuvrable board for long snake tracks back to lifts and deep snow trees. 185lbs 10.5-11us ride fuse. Was riding a 152 skipjack camber. Weight range was to 91kg though.
Hey Tim. That's a fun board and I think you can get the stance width's you want. I discovered after I reviewed it that it felt more stiff because Burton has a massive jump in recommended weight and its built thicker/stiffer in the 160 vs. the 155. The 155 is for 120-180lbs and the 160 is for 180-260lbs. Your 152 Skipjack was rated 150-200lbs so the 155 Forager will feel closer to your Skipjack but probably a little softer than what they say at 185lbs. It will be wide enough for your boots though and probably better than the Skipjack so that is good. I think I would have personally liked the 155 better as a daily driver but I would get the 160 if it's primarily for super deep mostly untracked pow.
Heavy and ultra bulky and navicular torture for a lot of people, their concept of ultra stiff shell and noodle liners is not optimal after a couple of weeks, I hope VANS fix these problems.
Thanks. Just ordered the draw string set of three. Already have the roll top, but want something g that will allow air to escape as I jam stuff on top of whatever is in the sack in the bottom of my pack. But also need the water resistance since I do a lot in the Olympics.
I’m wondering how the powgoda pro carbon rides…planning to buy both goat and powgoda and thinking of getting the pro version for only one of them. Maybe getting the goat pro and stay with powgoda enduro is a better choice than getting powgoda pro with goat enduro?
I don't know for certain but if it rides like the Pro-Carbon Split I own I'd want them both in Pro-Carbon. If you can only do one then maybe the Goat since it likes going straight more than the more turny Powgoda and would like that stiffer flex. Their Pro-Carbon is not like most "Pro/Ultra/Plus" boards out there. It's pretty damp and I think it has metal on the topsheet near the edges. It seems they only make a 162 Pro-Carbon for the Powgoda and Goat. do your specs work with those sizes?
@@thegoodridesnow I’m 6ft tall, 10.5-11us boots and currently weighing 250 lbs, I’m probably too heavy for the 162 but Im planning on losing some fat in the summer time and getting down to 200lbs. Do you think it’s gonna be the ideal size for my specs?
Yeah the 162 in the Powgoda will feel to soft at 150 but it's good for your boot size and a good fit for your height but that's not as important. The stiffer pro-carbon will do a little better with a heavier rider but 250 is still pretty heavy. The Enduro will feel too soft at 250 but If you get down to 200 both Enduro and Pro-Carbon will work so you can choose the one that calls to you more. I'd go 158 for the Goat if you want control if you get to 200lbs and 162 if you are heavier or 200lbs but want more of a bomber. If you are primarily riding the Powgoda for pow go 162 for Enduro and Pro-Carbon.
@@thegoodridesnow I truly appreciate your advice!! I think imma end up with both in pro version. Cutting weight is a must for me not just for snowboarding performance but also health benefits. Thanks again, I’ve been really enjoying your contents since I started the hobby.
Thanks! I think going with Pro-Carbon for both is a great call. Usually I suggest going the other way with other brands but their Pro-Carbon is different. You don't get that extra chatter that often comes with the upper tier model. Loosing weight will also make everything in life better.
Hey james. Are them more or less heavy respect to infuse boot? And how much?
Sorry but I didn't weight the Infuse when I reviewed it. If memory serves me correctly I think its lighter but still on the heavy side.
Can a surfboard also fit in it?
Didn't try but don't think so.
Rt on Davey. Thanks brother. Good review!
I'm 6ft5 200lbs so a XXL would be a better option for layering? I was thinking the XL
What is your Chest and what size jacket do you normally wear.
@@thegoodridesnow usually an xl, I'd have to get back to ya on the chest measure
XXL would be good if you like a lot of layering. Otherwise the XL will fit more medium compared to some in Volcom's line that fit a little more baggy.
The binding footprints for both Re:Flex and EST have been the same for over 10 years now. No board protection whatsoever, and Burton have been left behind on this front by other brands, especially Rome/Bataleon and Union. It's not the plastic unibody construction, as the 2024 K2 bindings with the new module chassis had a layer of foam underneath. Burton are just serving up the same bindings year on year.
I like the jacket but found the sizes quite large. The sleeves are for mr tickle
Thanks for sharing your honest and detailed experience! Truly helpful!
How do you like these compared to the black snowboard of death?
I like the 2024 and 2025 BSOD a lot but it's a different board compared to the Twins on this list. It's more comparable to the Frontier. The Frontier has better grip, is stiffer, better in uneven terrain and has a little more float. The BSOD has more pop, feels more light/dynamic underfoot and has a faster base. If you want to get into this more and do this right, hit me here to give me the info I need to help you much better. shop.thegoodride.com/merchandise/gear-advice/
Got it love it only problem is to save $100 I also bought the insulated comfort plus now my son always wants the ether light xt and I end up with the comfort plus which is good but the xt is the business👍. Good on you Davey just getting ready to start our winter riding season here in New Zealand and pumped🏂 get the large pillow to attach it rocks three quarters inflated 🤙
What board would you recommend to someone who loved the Burton Tricky Pony?? Thank you!
That was a fun board for the time. Burton doesn't have an equivalent to that right now. Maybe these if they fit your specs. They are different but about as close as you can get. Power Wagon, Cardiff Crane, Yes Standard Uninc, Jones Aviator 2.0, Endeavor Pioneer and 2025 YES Basic Uninc. If you want to do this right, hit me here to give me the info I need to help you much better. shop.thegoodride.com/merchandise/gear-advice/
@@thegoodridesnow Thank you very much!!!
they look heavy.
They are heavy. 2.8lbs per foot.
I tried them at a local shop and they felt great, next season test pair. I missed a bit more of stiffness, but they wrapped around the foot and the ankle extremely well. I rode them for one day and the only issue was the weight, but that's something that many people don't care about. But again, the way they adjusted to my ankle and my foot was really really good, and I think you can forgive that little lack of stiffness when the boots adjust so well. But we all have different feet, so it was just me. I am lucky that I can test lots of gear before buying it, because with boots, you are always taking a big risk.
Glad they work for you. Did you try them with the inserts in the tongue or do you just like a really stiff boot? Yeah the weight wasn't that noticable riding the mountain/taking lifts but if I went hiking or touring it would be.
The Blake Paul version have the calf extenders.. any other boots you can recommend with something similar?
I think the 32 Jones pro model were the first ones to have that feature. Take a look.
2025 Ride Deadbolts, 2025 Ride Lasso and 2024 Ride Torrent have calf adjusters that are more for accomodating different calf sizes vs touring like this Vans and the Jones.
Cheers for this review much appreciated... just pulled the trigger on a 2024 model on sale, I'm running: 6ft, boot size 10.5 172lbs... hoping a 160 ain't too big. Hopefully will be something a bit more stable at speed compared to my 156 Salomon assassin (which is my first board I enjoy it but feels a bit small for my boots) and hoping this passport will hold an edge better.
Thanks! So, yeah, you are right that the Assassin 156 is pretty narrow for 10.5 boots. A 160 Passport is wider and a much better suited for your specs. Its also considerably more damp than the Assassin so that combined with it being sized right should make the board grip better and just ride better in all conditions. Cheers!
As always great reviews! Did you ever try Deeluxe boots? What do you think about them?
Thanks!. I tried them about 5 years ago. They were super comfortable but bulky and had a very long footprint. They pack in a lot too so feel loose after about 10-15 days. 2 years ago my friends at a shop tested them and found the same issues. Not sure if things have changed for 2025
@@thegoodridesnow thank you for the infos! Do the adidas tactical lexicon pack out too or do they stay more consistent throughout usage?
They dont pack out much but aren't available for sale anymore. Adidas pulled out of snowboarding a few yrs ago
@@thegoodridesnow thanks!
Never knew Vans made insoles
Huh? All snowboard boot manufacturers make insoles to go with their boots. Check the full review to see what I'm talking about.
BOA inserts ripped out of mine day 9 on the right boot then left day 15. Not durable
That sucks. What year and what did Vans customer service do to make it right?
BOA sucks. I was a big fan because I had a pair of Ride Insano with steel BOA, and it worked amazingly well. Then after almost 3 seasons of amazing performance, the Insanos got destroyed and tried other boots. This time the Ride Lasso Pro with textil cable, which they claim to be as resistant as the steel ones. BS. Inserts ripped out, and cables ripped, after not even 90 days. They didn't even last half the season. Then I had a pair of 32 crab grab BOA, textil also. The inserts resisted but the cables all ripped at the same time. I contacted BOA because they've got life guarantee apparently. This was 6 months ago. They never sent me the replacement. I had to go to a local shop, thank god they are friends and have got steel replacements, and they fixed them because I can't be without boots, because I am an instructor. 6 months and I am still waiting for their response. Those were the last BOA boots I will ever have. No more. I have bought a pair of Deeluxe Team ID LTD with flex boosters and they feel absolutely great. I don't know how are they going to perform till the season starts, obviously, but I don't want BOA anymore. There's a big problem nowadays with boots durability though. I don't know what is happening since the pandemic, but all boots seem to be lower quality and more expensive. Especially Ride was really disappointing, and not only because of the BOA, but because of many other issues, and especially because their Insano are the best boots I've ever had.
Are deadbolts your daily’s these days?
Yes but been enjoying the Bataleon Acid BOA boots coming out next season. Trying to decide between the two. My take is up on Patreon and YT Members.
@@thegoodridesnow yep I’ve been up to date, Bataleon acid could be me too because of wrap liner, I really like the boa harness on the fuse as there are no hot spots, if they were a touch softer I’d love them.
Thanks for joining up! Greatly appreciated. Yeah I'm so torn. The Deadbolt's flex doesn't seem to last as long but it fits better and is 0.6lbs lighter per foot. The Acid is a little too wide before the ankle and it's hard to tighten there wtih the BOA. It's also maybe 1/8-1/4 size too long and I'm worried about how much it will pack out. The Fuse's are great boots but they don't loose their flex easy. They also don't have much shock absorption. You might like the 2025 Deadbolt because it has a new bottom BOA harness that completely wraps around your ankle vs. the 2024 that only partly wraps but it depends on how much you ride.
Thanks for the review! Which boot would you say felt the best for you?
happy to help. Do you mean boot I rode with the Katana or binding aka Katana vs. Black Label?
@@thegoodridesnowYes sorry, with the Katana.
Both are excellent bindings. The Katana is more smooth and the Black Label is more dynamic.
@@thegoodridesnow Sorry again haha, you said you rode the Katanas with the Bodega and Torrent boots.. I was wondering which boot you felt more comfortable with the binding? Thank you for the replies!
Torrents fit me better so I prefered that boot but the Bodegas blend well with Rome bindings if they fit your foot better than mine. If you want to go Rome try the Libertines.
Just a side note, you should mention that EST has a limited angle. So I have the Burton X which is like their top tier halo binding. It’s all carbon. I ride normal with a 30 degree in the front and plus 21 degrees in the back. EST will limit my front leg up to 27 degrees in the front, and 21 degrees on the back leg. If you are goofy, the numbers i gave would be inverted, and the reason why it’s limited to those max angles is because of the length of the rails on the side of the binding. Just fyi. Love the video. I might get a pair of cartel x and swap out the footbed for my Burton X EST. The footbed on the X is just two layers of carbon separated by 6 carbon spacers. I feel with my weight, i will smash the footbed on a kicker.
Thanks for taking the time to write this and good to know about the stance angles. Let us know how the mix n match plays out if you go that route. Cheers!
Thank you for your input.
Hopefully there's no charcoal, would make them disposable.
What the hell, are these guys under the Nidecker Group? Are they supllied by Flow? Everything about this binding is a carbon copy of the Nidecker Kaons (beside the high back) which themselves use Flow Fenix parts because they own Flow.
Not sure on the exact relationship, but yeah, the base is Nidecker Kayon for sure. The straps, ratchets and highback are something else though that I haven't seen from Nidecker. I forgot to address the similarities. Thanks for bringing this up.
Nice red jacket
Many Thanks! The Skyline Fuse is the best jacket I've ever owned.
Have the photochromic pair and just wore them on a alpine hike over 6 days in temperatures from -4 c to 28 degrees c in hail and bluebird and they were phenomenal! Smith rock! 🤙
thanks for your take.
Man that was a solid tree hit...
Hi, i´m 5.5 ft and 140lb, size s would be fine?
What size jacket do you normally wear? Also what is your chest size?
According to Nidecker, their suggested weight range on a 161 is 154-187lbs and the 164W is 177-209lbs. My weight fluxes between 182-189 out of the shower and I use a 10.5 boot. Any recommendations on board size choice? 164 seems longer than I normally ride but I also don’t want too much toe overhang or to be undergunned either…
Tough call. I would worry more about boot size, and you are somewhat in between sizes, so it depends on what make/model/size board you are used to now. With 1.5he 161 will probably have toe/heel drag if you like to carve hard or ride a lot of steep terrain. The 164w is not going to have toe/heel drag but it's a little wide for you. You might like a different board but if you want to force a Megalight go 164w if you carve hard and ride steeper terrain. You should be able to still turn it medium fast in tight spots. If you want to get into it more hit me here to give me the info I need to help you much better. shop.thegoodride.com/merchandise/gear-advice/
Hi, how is the torsionally flexible? Is it torsionally stiff or medium?
Pretty medium just like its tip to tail flex. Maybe a touch stiffer but close
@@thegoodridesnow thank you! Is that for your size 9 boots in 156 or 154 when you said it’s a torch stiffer than medium? :) thanks again!
No prob. The 156 I have now and just finished testing (review coming) and that was a great size for me but the flex is pretty consistent throughout the sizes.
Ah! Okay! Looking forward to your new review. I am the exact same height, same boots, same foot width too as you! But I’m 167-170lbs, not sure to try the 154 or 156. By the way, have you guys tested K2 Almanac?
Oh for sure go 156 then. It matches up better with your specs than mine. No I haven't but hope to early next season.
We always love your reviews!! 😃
How tall are you? I'm 5'6" and wondering if I should get the long version for some extra roominess or if this will be more than enough!
Steph is 5'3" it fit great but she did have a little extra room in the length of the bag. The regular is rated for up to 5'7". But if you are that close to the limit, it may depend on what is more important, extra comfort or saving the little extra weight and room in your pack.
